Introducing The Far Bearing
Two stories are live already. Here's where The Far Bearing is headed, and why.
I grew up on the Maine coast, close enough to hear the fog before you could see it. My father’s side of the family is Canadian, and as I work toward dual citizenship there, I’ve felt myself pulled further into that whole northern edge of the continent — coastal Maine, the Maritimes, the dark woods behind both. That’s the country this Substack belongs to.
The stories here are Gothic horror, mostly quiet — the kind that comes in on the tide or waits at the tree line rather than jumping out of it. Two are live already:
“The Boots of Silas Walsh” — a Crown land surveyor whose instruments stop agreeing with the ground beneath him.
“Backwater” — a millwright bound to a tide-driven wheel that has been running, faithfully, for a purpose that stopped existing decades ago.
Both are free to read. New stories will land here as they’re written — I’m not going to promise a schedule I can’t keep, but this is a project I intend to keep feeding.
If any of that sounds like your kind of dark, subscribe and I’ll see you at the next tide.
